A New PDRN Clinical Trial Just Changed What We Know About Salmon DNA Skincare

PDRN has moved from regenerative medicine and Korean aesthetic clinics into some of the most talked-about serums in skincare.

The ingredient, traditionally made from purified fragments of salmon or trout DNA, has long been used in regenerative medicine and has become especially well known through Korean aesthetic treatments. Now it is everywhere in skincare, turning up in serums, creams, eye treatments, and sheet masks promising smoother, firmer, more resilient-looking skin.

For a while, the science behind topical PDRN was much less impressive than the trend surrounding it. Most of the stronger research involved injections or medical applications, which left one fairly obvious question: Can a DNA-derived ingredient this large actually do much when you apply it to your face?

A human study published in July 2026 finally gave us a better answer.

From a clinical pharmacist perspective, that is what makes PDRN worth revisiting now. The ingredient has gone from biologically interesting to genuinely promising in topical skincare, although the evidence is still far smaller than the marketing would suggest.

What Is PDRN?

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. Traditional PDRN is made from highly purified DNA fragments obtained from salmonid fish.

It has been studied for its role in tissue repair, with proposed effects involving adenosine A2A receptor signaling, nucleotide recycling, fibroblast activity, and production of components that help make up the skin’s extracellular matrix.

In simpler terms, PDRN appears to support some of the biological processes involved in tissue repair and skin structure.

That sounds ideal for an anti-aging serum. The harder part has always been delivery.

PDRN molecules are relatively large, and the outer layer of skin is specifically designed to limit what gets through. Earlier studies showing benefits from injected PDRN could therefore tell us very little about whether a topical cosmetic would behave the same way.

The Study That Made Topical PDRN More Interesting

In July 2026, researchers published a randomized, double-blind study evaluating a topical salmon-derived PDRN preparation with an average molecular weight of no more than 850 kDa.

The finished eye cream contained 0.1% PDRN, or 1,000 ppm.

Researchers first examined whether the ingredient could move beyond the outer surface of the skin. Using laboratory skin models, ex vivo skin, and an exploratory human experiment, they detected PDRN-associated signals within viable portions of the epidermis.

The clinical portion included 31 women between ages 35 and 55. One side of the eye area received the PDRN cream while the other received a cream containing 0.1% retinol. Both were applied twice daily for four weeks.

The PDRN-treated side showed greater improvements in several measurements, including:

  • Crow’s-feet wrinkle area and number
  • Infraorbital wrinkles
  • Skin elasticity and firmness
  • Dermal thickness and density
  • Eye-bag volume
  • Tear-trough depth

No adverse reactions were reported during the four-week trial.

These are impressive results for an ingredient whose topical benefits were previously supported mostly by laboratory data and extrapolation from injectable treatments.

There are limitations. The study was short, relatively small, and tested one specific PDRN preparation in one specific cream. The human penetration portion also involved only one volunteer.

So we finally have evidence that a well-formulated topical PDRN product can have measurable effects on skin. We do not yet know whether every serum labeled PDRN will behave the same way.

Is PDRN Better Than Retinol?

The 2026 study makes this comparison tempting because the PDRN side outperformed the retinol side across several measurements.

The difference was especially noticeable for crow’s-feet: wrinkle area and number decreased by roughly 20% to 23% on the PDRN-treated side, compared with about 6% to 7% on the retinol-treated side.

I would not use that finding to replace a well-tolerated retinoid.

Retinoids have decades of research supporting their ability to improve photoaging, collagen production, fine lines, and skin texture. Many of those changes develop over months. A four-week comparison does not give retinol much time to show its full effect.

PDRN makes more sense as an additional supportive ingredient, particularly for people interested in smoother-looking skin and elasticity without adding another highly irritating active.

What Can PDRN Actually Do for Skin?

Fine Lines and Firmness

This is currently the most compelling cosmetic use.

The 2026 trial found measurable improvements in wrinkles, firmness, elasticity, and dermal structure after four weeks. Laboratory testing from the same study also showed effects on pathways involved in collagen and extracellular matrix production.

Longer and larger studies would make this much more convincing, but the early human results are encouraging.

Skin Repair and Resilience

PDRN already has a history in regenerative medicine. In a randomized clinical trial involving people with diabetic foot ulcers, PDRN treatment improved complete wound healing compared with placebo.

A cosmetic serum should not be expected to reproduce a medical injectable treatment. Still, the research helps explain why PDRN became interesting to skincare formulators in the first place.

Hydration and Plumpness

Many popular PDRN products also contain hyaluronic acid, panthenol, peptides, ceramides, niacinamide, or squalane.

Those ingredients can produce noticeable improvements in hydration and softness much faster than PDRN-driven skin remodeling would be expected to occur.

If your new PDRN serum makes your skin look plumper within two days, the hydrating base probably deserves some of the credit.

Dark Spots and Acne Scars

I would temper expectations here.

There is some early research involving PDRN and pigmentation pathways, but the evidence is much weaker than it is for established brightening ingredients.

PDRN would not be my first choice for treating melasma, post-acne marks, or significant acne scarring.

Salmon DNA Is No Longer the Only Option

PDRN skincare is also beginning to move beyond fish-derived ingredients.

A 2026 study investigated low-molecular-weight PDRN derived from Paeonia lactiflora, or peony. Small human evaluations found improvements in measures including barrier recovery and periorbital elasticity.

The research is still preliminary, but it means PDRN on a label no longer automatically tells you where the ingredient came from.

Some brands now use ginseng, peony, rose, or other plant-derived nucleotide ingredients.

If avoiding animal-derived ingredients is important to you, check the source rather than relying on the PDRN label alone.

Does PDRN Need Microneedling to Work?

Probably not in every case.

The 2026 study found evidence that its specific topical formulation could reach viable skin without microneedling or another penetration-enhancing procedure.

Formulation still plays a major role. Molecular weight, concentration, vehicle, and contact time can all influence how an ingredient behaves on skin.

I would also avoid applying an ordinary cosmetic PDRN serum immediately after at-home microneedling. A product designed for intact skin has not necessarily been tested for application through fresh microchannels.

How to Shop for a PDRN Serum

PDRN brands love displaying ppm numbers prominently on the bottle.

For reference:

1,000 ppm = 0.1%

That is the concentration used in the 2026 clinical study.

It does not mean 1,000 ppm is automatically the ideal concentration, or that 10,000 ppm is ten times better.

Instead, look at the entire formula:

  • PDRN source: salmon-derived or plant-derived
  • Concentration: useful when disclosed, but only one part of the formula
  • Supporting ingredients: hyaluronic acid, panthenol, peptides, ceramides, squalane, and niacinamide can make the product more useful overall
  • Formula type: cream, serum, ampoule, and toner vehicles behave differently
  • Fragrance and irritants: especially relevant if you already have reactive skin
  • Brand transparency: clear sourcing and formulation information are more meaningful than dramatic regenerative claims

PDRN Products Worth Trying

ANUA PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum

Best for dehydrated skin and PDRN beginners

This is one of the easiest ways to try the category without building your whole routine around it. Anua pairs salmon-derived PDRN with hyaluronic-acid-focused hydration and a lightweight serum texture, which gives the formula a practical benefit even while the longer-term PDRN research develops.

REJURAN Turnover Ampoule

Best for a clinical-grade PDRN experience

Rejuran is closely associated with the clinical polynucleotide and PDRN category, and its Turnover Ampoule uses the brand’s c-PDRN technology in a leave-on cosmetic format. It makes the most sense for someone specifically interested in PDRN rather than buying a serum where the ingredient plays a minor supporting role.

Genabelle PDRN Vita Toning Ampoule

Best for dull-looking skin

Genabelle builds this formula around PDRN alongside antioxidant and brightening-supportive ingredients, including vitamins and additional hydrating components. The broader formula makes it more appealing if your goals include uneven-looking tone along with hydration and texture.

Genabelle PDRN Rejuvenating Cream

Best for dry skin

This is a more barrier-friendly way to add PDRN without introducing another watery serum. The formula combines 1,000 ppm PDRN with ceramide and peptide support, making the moisturizer base itself a strong reason to use it.

REJURAN Nutritive Cream

Best richer moisturizer

For dry or more mature skin, Rejuran’s Nutritive Cream puts its c-PDRN ingredient into a richer moisturizing vehicle. This is the option I would look at when hydration and comfort are higher priorities than adding another dedicated treatment serum.

MEDIHEAL PDRN Lifting Serum With Squalane

Best multitasking formula

Mediheal combines its PDRN complex with squalane, niacinamide, and adenosine, giving the serum several established cosmetic functions beyond the PDRN itself. It is especially appealing if you prefer a serum that targets hydration and smoother-looking skin from multiple angles.

COSRX 5 PDRN Collagen Serum

Best newer PDRN launch

COSRX takes a different approach by combining multiple PDRN sources, including salmon DNA and plant- or ferment-derived materials, with low-molecular-weight collagen and additional skin-conditioning ingredients. Multiple sources have not been proven superior clinically, but this is one of the more interesting newer formulas in the category.

Genabelle PDRN Rejuvenating Toner

Best for a lightweight routine

For someone who already uses several serums, a toner can be the easier format. This formula combines PDRN with panthenol and hyaluronic acid, making hydration the more immediate, predictable benefit while PDRN remains a supporting active.

VT Cosmetics PDRN 100 Essence

Best plant-derived option

VT takes the PDRN concept in a different direction with a ginseng-derived nucleotide ingredient rather than traditional salmon PDRN. It is worth considering if you want to explore the category while avoiding fish-derived ingredients, although the clinical evidence for plant-derived topical PDRN is even newer.

How to Add PDRN to Your Routine

PDRN is refreshingly uncomplicated from a routine perspective.

For a serum or ampoule:

  1. Cleanse.
  2. Apply toner or essence if you use one.
  3. Apply your PDRN serum.
  4. Follow with moisturizer.
  5. Finish with sunscreen in the morning.

Most gentle PDRN formulas can be used once or twice daily.

PDRN itself is not an exfoliating acid, retinoid, or benzoyl peroxide treatment, so there is no universal requirement to separate it from vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides, or retinoids.

The rest of the ingredient list decides how easy a particular product is to combine.

Who Should Be More Cautious?

Topical PDRN appears well tolerated in the limited human studies available so far, including the 2026 trial in participants who described their skin as sensitive.

We still do not have the depth of safety data available for older cosmetic ingredients.

A few practical considerations:

  • Fish allergy: A highly purified salmon-derived DNA ingredient contains far less protein than the original biological source, but people with severe fish allergies may reasonably prefer a plant-derived product or discuss use with their allergist.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Robust pregnancy-specific safety data for cosmetic PDRN products are lacking. Ask your clinician if you prefer to use it during pregnancy, particularly when the formula contains other active ingredients.
  • Eczema or actively inflamed skin: Wait until a significant flare has settled before introducing a new treatment product.
  • After microneedling or procedures: Use only products specifically recommended for post-procedure application rather than assuming a normal cosmetic serum is appropriate for compromised skin.

So, Does Topical PDRN Actually Work?

For the first time, the answer is more interesting than a simple maybe.

A well-designed 2026 study showed that a specific 0.1% salmon-derived PDRN formulation could produce PDRN-associated signals in viable skin and improve measurable signs of periocular aging over four weeks. The wrinkle, elasticity, dermal-density, and eye-area results were strong enough to make topical PDRN a legitimate ingredient to watch.

The evidence for the category as a whole remains limited.

We do not yet know whether different molecular weights penetrate similarly, whether a watery serum behaves like the studied water-in-silicone cream, how much concentration influences results, or whether benefits continue to build over six months or a year. One excellent formulation cannot validate every product carrying PDRN on its label.

PDRN has progressed beyond a fascinating ingredient with an injectable backstory. Topical human data now exists, and it is promising. Proven staples such as sunscreen and retinoids still have a much deeper evidence base for photoaging, while PDRN fits comfortably into the emerging category: scientifically plausible, increasingly supported, gentle enough to be appealing, and worth watching as better trials arrive.

If your current routine already covers sunscreen, moisturizer, and the evidence-based actives suited to your goals, a well-formulated PDRN serum is a reasonable next experiment.

  • Does topical PDRN have human evidence? Yes. A 2026 randomized split-face trial produced encouraging results with a specific 0.1% salmon-derived preparation.
  • Can PDRN penetrate intact skin? Evidence now suggests certain formulations can reach viable skin regions, although delivery appears formulation-dependent.
  • Is every PDRN serum clinically proven? No. Results from one formulation cannot be applied across the entire category.
  • Is PDRN better than retinol? That has not been established. The direct trial lasted only four weeks, while retinoids have a much larger and longer clinical evidence base.
  • Who may like it most? People interested in hydration, smoother-looking skin, supportive anti-aging care, or gentler alternatives to highly irritating routines.
  • Is salmon-derived PDRN required? No. Plant-derived alternatives are emerging, although their clinical research is even earlier.
  • Would I build a routine around PDRN alone? No. Sunscreen and established evidence-based treatments still deserve priority.
